Postal Inspectors Offer Reward of up to $10,000 for Theft of US Mail

>> Download Press Release (pdf)

ALBUQUERQUE, NM — The U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of person(s) responsible for the theft of U.S. Mail. There has been a recent rise of break-ins to Neighborhood Delivery Collection Box Units located in the residential areas of Albuquerque Metro to include some areas of Rio Rancho, NM. Postal Inspectors seek the public’s assistance in identifying those responsible for vandalizing and stealing U.S. Mail from these units.

Customers affected by mail theft should file a report by logging on to http://postalinspectors.uspis.gov or call USPIS at (877) 876-2455 and file a mail theft complaint. A report should also be filed in the event any financial accounts were compromised due to the theft of mail.

The Postal Service is working to install or replace the affected residential collection boxes as quickly as possible. Until the affected units are functioning, mail will be held at the servicing Post Offices for customers to pick up. Customers can log on to www.usps.com to find the Post Office that services their area. As a reminder, it is important to try and collect your mail at the end of every day.

Mail theft is a violation of the United States Federal Criminal Code, Title 18 U.S.C. 1708, and carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison. Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call (877) 876¬2455. For media inquiries, please contact Postal Inspector Trejo at (602) 223¬3602.
